The mission of the Silicon Valley Gay Men's Chorus is to inspire our diverse community through musical excellence and collective pride.
Transform and Unite our global community through song.
We will always:
The Silicon Valley Gay Men's Chorus (SVGMC) was originally called the Liedermann Gay Men's Chorus of San Jose. A group of ten men formed the Chorus on June 29, 1983. The Chorus sang its first full-length performance under the direction of Robert B.Welton on June 16, 1984 as part of San Jose's Gay Pride Celebration.
The Chorus' Artistic Directors have included:
SVGMC takes great pride in its record of community appearances, and has proudly performed at GALA Festivals in 1989, 1992, 1996, 2000 (Co-Host), 2004, 2008 and 2012.
The Chorus is happy to support the fine efforts of other non-profit organizations and government bodies in our communities. The Chorus is available for hire for private parties and corporate events such as picnics, diversity days, and holiday celebrations. The cost to have the Chorus perform is based on the nature of the event. Please contact us for more information.
Shawn Reifschneider, a vocal coach and choral director for over two decades, made his debut directing SVGMC in June 2010. He began his high school teaching career for the San Mateo Union High School District in 2000, currently teaching at both San Mateo and Burlingame High Schools. Mr. Reifschneider also holds the Music Director position for the Unitarian Universalists of San Mateo. He has been a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for music camps, festivals and honor choirs. In addition, he has enjoyed directing vocals for numerous musicals over the years. His favorites include A Funny Think Happened on the Way to the Forum, Peter Pan, RENT, and West Side Story. Once in a while, you can catch him on stage performing. His favorite appearance was playing the title role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Mr. Reifschneider's formal education includes a Bachelor of Science degree and Teaching Credential from California State University in Hayward, double majoring in Vocal Performance and Business Administration, as well as a Master of Divinity degree, Music and Worship emphasis, from Western Seminary. He feels abundant gratitude for the love and support of his partner, family, and friends who have encouraged his passion of instilling the love of music making in others.
Doug McGrath was born to country-and-western parents. That he fell in love with classical and choral music may lend argument to nature versus nurture, but that's a story for a different time. Born in Colorado and growing up on a farm in western Kansas, he was drawn to piano at an early age, but didn't start lessons until the ripe old age of 13. Since moving to California and adapting to color, he's accompanied the Silicon Valley Gay Men's Chorus, the Rainbow Women's Chorus, Opus Q, and Colla Voce. Software engineering supports his musical habit, and when not at the piano or playing geek, he can be found underwater with the Northern California Rainbow Divers. He serves as webmaster for Colla Voce, is single, and lives on the San Francisco peninsula.
